Google’s searches go musical

Darren Allan

Google has announced that new music search options are to be available on its US site.

When a user types in a song name, the search engine will automatically produce a streamed preview of that track delivered by partners such as MySpace and LaLa.

If you type in a band, Google will point to previews of the outfit’s most popular tunes. If you only know a lyric, you can simply type that in.

For example, tap in “Smell like I sound I’m lost in a crowd” and the search engine will come back with an audio snippet of the song in question, Duran Duran’s Hungry Like the Wolf.

Links will be provided to buy the song there and then, making the whole experience of listening to and purchasing music a seamless one conducted entirely from Google.

It isn’t clear when the service will make its way across to this side of the pond.
