Motorola’s much anticipated handset is finally here. The Motorola Droid was officially announced by its maker along with its official carrier, Verizon and will be available to customers starting November 6.

Some of the devices’ much anticipated feature include a voice-activated search that allows users to speak a search query and its search engine, of course, powered by Google, will display the search results directly into the phone’s screen. But it’s not only for web searches. Voice controls also works with the new turn-by-turn directions for Google Maps. It allows users to view geographic information, such as My Maps, Wikipedia entries, and transit lines on the map.

Aside from this cool new features, the Droid will also have access to more than 10,000 applications already available in the Android Market.

As for its hardware specifications, the Droid comes exactly as advertised. It has the latest (recently released to developers) Android 2.0, a 5-megapixel camera, Wi-Fi, Bluetooth, and GPS. It has a Webkit HTML 5 browser, and it’s powered by a 550MHz processor and a 1,400mAh lithium ion battery offering 6.4 hours of continuous talk time and up to 11 days of standby time.

Aesthetically, the device stands at about 4.6 inches tall by 2.4 inches wide by 0.5 inch thick and weighs 6 ounces. And it has a 3.7-inch, 16:9 touch screen with 480 x 854-pixel resolution. It also has a 3.5mm headphone jack, a micro-USB port, and comes with a 16GB micro-SD card.

A lot of people are claiming the Droid as the “iPhone Killer”, and by looking at its specs and its functionalities, who can blame them? If it’s not the “iPhone Killer”, then it definitely is one of the best iPhone alternative out in the market today.

But the big question is whether or not consumers will flock to the Droid. Several new smartphones are launching right before the holiday season, including additional new Android devices and Research In Motion’s new BlackBerry Storm 2.
