by Janet Harris

The BBC is continuing its strategy to make its successful iPlayer service available on more platforms with the launch of a beta version on the Freesat platform this month.

A full service is expected next year, and will be available on all Freesat HD boxes.

The iPlayer is also available via the Nintendo Wii and Sony Playstation 3 games consoles, and through cable TV provider Virgin Media.

The Freesat version uses the MHEG-5 standard which is already used to broadcast interactive services.

The BBC has extended the standard to use an interaction channel for handling internet video.

The BBC is also developing TV versions of the iPlayer built on HTML and Flash.
