IT workers bottom of health table

Darren Allan

A survey has determined that IT professionals are amongst the least active and most unhealthy workers in the country.

In other shock news, some of them are also nerds (this writer included).

The research, conducted by personal training organisation Fat Free Fitness, surveyed 1,700 UK workers.

Only 19% of IT workers said they managed to get the government’s baseline of half an hour of moderate exercise five times a week.

That was the worst result polled, with receptionists not too far behind on 26%, and sales people on 28%.

IT folks also fared badly when it came to the question of healthy diets. Only 14% said they had five fruit and veg a day (and no, your iPod or Mac doesn’t count as an apple).

Couple that with the highest caffeine intake in the survey – averaging ten cups a day, two more than the recommended maximum – and the IT worker is looking distinctly green around the gills.

Perhaps insurance companies are going to start classifying IT professionals in the same bracket with stuntmen and war journalists.

It doesn’t surprise me that IT workers are the unhealthiest workers in the UK and despite them drinking inordinate amounts of coffee and not in taking the healthy daily amount of fruit and veg… you don’t see many obese IT workers. I think stress is a factor and even though they’re not running on a treadmill 30 minutes a day, they probably exert themselves enough each day answering to other people’s technology stresses which must be a regular and demanding occurrence. IT geeks should take a moment out of their stressed life and relax by playing on this game specially developed for IT workers… IT Manager 3: Unseen Forces
