Despite misgivings, uncertainty, and doubts, from so-called “experts” on the success of Google’s Android OS during its release, the company still pushed through and is now reaping the rewards as Android becomes one of the most promising mobile OS in the market. Now, they are taking it even farther with reports of a Google-branded phone under development.
Several internet rumors hinted that Google will be partnering with phone manufacturer HTC in creating an Android device thinner than the Droid and iPhone. Furthermore, the said device could make its appearance as early as 2010.
Of course, these are all just rumors, but credible nonetheless. Google probably wants to make a mobile device that is according to the exact specifications that they want and what they envisioned the Android OS to run on. There’s no word on what kind of specs the handset would have, but potential manufacturers for the phone include LG and Samsung.
Furthermore, the reports also said that the phone will be sold directly by Google. This could mean that the phone won’t be locked to a network partner of Google’s choosing, therefore, an open handset. The Google phone could cost as much as $500, and would have to run on a SIM-friendly GSM networks. While a carrier-free Google phone would be an unusual move in the age of exclusivity contracts, it’s not unheard of. Handset makers such as RIM and Palm sell unlocked versions of their smartphones through Amazon and other retailers.
Regarding the success of Google’s new endeavor, we won’t know until the phone is actually released. But with the success of Android and Google’s almost limitless resources, this could be a huge step that would rival giants like Nokia, Samsung, and even Apple.
