EU gets new digital commissioner

The EU has a new Digital Commissioner, Neelie Kroes, who will be replacing the existing commissioner, Vivienne Reding.

But if companies and governments think that she will be a push over, being new to the job, they should take a little look at her resume.

Neelie Kroes is currently the EU’s competition commissioner and in that role was the person responsible for placing those huge fines on Microsoft and Intel, which led to the companies having to change strategies and restructure their businesses to a certain degree.

The new commissioner will have the job of implementing the new European telecom rules established by Vivienne Reding and recently accepted by the European parliament after a vote by members.
