Freesat to beta test hybrid broadcast

The first deployment of the hybrid broadcast broadband MHEG Interaction Channel (MHEG IC) will be on the free to view satellite service Freesat.

The announcement has been welcomed by The International MHEG Promotion Alliance (IMPALA).

The service will allow users to access the BBC’s iPlayer through an IP connection, providing its viewers with more content.

The MHEG IC system works on the principle of streaming the video content.

This has been a long time in the making and the technology is what holds the whole thing together, allowing a seamless experience for the viewer.

The service allows broadcasters to produce hybrid files from which applications can be created to work on both broadband-connected and non-connected equipment, providing a more user-friendly experience.
