Microsoft makes peace with EU in browser wars

Darren Allan

Microsoft has conceded that it will offer a choice of web browsers with its Windows operating systems in the future.

The company has long been criticised for exploiting its position of dominance in the PC industry by only supplying its own Internet Explorer browser.

After the agreement Microsoft has reached with the European Commission, Windows 7, XP or Vista users will be presented with a screen whereby they can select their preferred web browser.

This will happen in March next year, via Windows Update. A large selection of browsers will be available, with all the popular bases covered including Firefox, Safari and Chrome.

PC manufacturers will also be able to choose which browser to supply as the default option with their machines.

By reaching this agreement, Microsoft has avoided another potential hefty fine from the EC. And the PC community has gained a bit more freedom of choice, to boot.
