Firefox mobile browser on the cusp of launching

Darren Allan

Mozilla says that the mobile incarnation of its Firefox web browser is on the verge of springing onto a phone near you.

Talking to the BBC, a spokesman for Mozilla said it was only “days away” from launch. So perhaps Santa is going to be dropping it down chimneys come the end of the week.

Mind you, it will do you no good if you don’t have a Nokia stocking; or indeed a Nokia mobile phone. Initially, it will only be available for the Nokia N900, downloadable from the Ovi store.

But Mozilla is planning versions for Windows Mobile and Android.

One of Fennec’s (the browser’s codename) neatest features is the ability to sync with your desktop Firefox, so it’s possible to transfer web pages directly across.

With Firefox 3.5 currently basking in the glory of being the world’s most popular browser (if only due to the numbers of Internet Explorer users split between IE 7 and 8), it should be interesting to see what sort of an impact its mobile sibling makes.
