BBC should make Scotland’s news more Scottish

The reporting of local and regional news has always been an issue for the BBC’s regional news channels and this has been apparent in Scotland, where an MSP is calling for the BBC to allow regional opt outs from the Reporting Scotland programme.

MSP Brian Adam suggests that this move would increase the amount of localised news and reduce the central news that currently dominates the programme.

According to Brian Adam the current format focuses on the central belt and is not a reflection of what is actually going on in the entire region and therefore residents of more remote areas are not hearing any news from where they live.

Opt outs are used in local radio very successfully and there is no reason why this cannot work in TV as well.
