ESPN to launch 3D Channel

The sports channel that took over from the failed satellite broadcaster Setanta is to launch a dedicated 3D live sports channel sometime this year.

“Sometime this year” will obviously mean before the football World Cup in South Africa which starts on the 10th or 11th June, as this would be the best time to launch any new sports channel with the rights to show these games.

The problem is that 3D HDTV is not standard kit and the consumer is going to need a new television, glasses and the right equipment from their cable or satellite provider, so it is not going to be completely plain sailing.

Switching to 3D HDTV is not going to be as simple as switching from analogue TV to digital TV either.
