LG Electronics Announces the GW990 Smartphone

It’s been a while since we’ve last seen LG Electronics release a new mobile handset. But, at the CES, LG announced their upcoming GW990 smartphone that would be in competition with other contemporary smartphones out in the market today.

The GW990 smartphone looks, and feels, like it could be a real hit when it finally gets to the market in the second half of the year. The phone measures 6 inches long and 2.5 inches wide, making it longer than any smartphone out in the market today. It’s a bit hefty which is expected from a particularly large device.

The GW990 features a capacitive touchscreen interface, which according to tests, is very reponsive to user’s touches and matches the reponsiveness of the popular Apple iPhone. Furthermore, the GW990 will run on the second-generation Atom-based Moorestown processor. The Moorestown processor will be powerful enough to allow the phone to support 720p high-definition video in 3D. This would probably look very good on the phone’s 4.8-inch diagonal screen.

The phone’s resolution is reported at 1024 pixels by 480 pixels, with an aspect ratio of 2.13 to 1, which makes the phone an ideal movie player especially when videos are viewed in landscape mode.

Even though the GW990 seems good at multi-tasking the manufacturer has not released the clock speed on the Moorestown processor. But speculators are saying that it could probably match the 1Ghz speed of the Snapdragon processor currently used by Google’s Nexus One phone.

The phone’s exact release date and pricing has not been released as of the moment.
