Supermarket behemoth Tesco‘s mobile division is gathering a predictable head of steam.
Apparently strong sales of the newly stocked iPhone, and budget party phones, over the Christmas and new year period helped boost Tesco Mobile customer numbers over the two million mark.
On Christmas Day, one new Tesco Mobile customer was activating their handset every two seconds across the UK.
The “surprise hit” for the period was the VX1i Party Phone, a credit card sized mini-mobile that costs just £19.
It sold thousands on the run-up to Christmas, with party-goers electing to take it out boozing, rather than their expensive smartphone which could easily get lost in the festivities.
Tesco said in a statement: “Our 100 Tesco Phone Shops have been key to this success, helping customers find the right mobile for their needs and offering consumers choice, convenience and a non-pressured sales environment. Tesco Telecoms will roll-out a further 100 Phone Shops in 2010.”
