Dish TV sees DTH demand jump

Website: Rapid TV News

Indian DTH platform Dish TV has recorded an impressive jump in revenues for the last quarter of 2009, up 44% on the same quarter 2008.

Revenues reached Rs2,786 million (US$60 million) as subscribers grew by 550,000 during the three months, to 6.4 million. During the nine months to the end of 2009, 1.4 million new subscribers were added.

Dish TV remains India’s DTH market leader, claiming 35% of the six-operator market. But while 1.4 million subs added over the nine months sounds impressive, the total across the sector was 6.5 million, of which 2.4 million came in the last quarter – with Dish TV accounting for just around 23% of these. That means Dish TV’s market share is bound to suffer in future in the expanded market.

EBITDA for the quarter stood at Rs117 million, compared to a Rs389 million EBITDA loss incurred during the corresponding period last year. And while the platform is still running at a huge loss, reporting negative Rs762 million for the quarter, those losses continue to fall. The loss for the same period the previous year was Rs1,180 million.
