A new digital music format has emerged which could make the humble MP3 obsolete.
However, it’s not radically different as such, and basically adds a host of extras to the actual digital music track itself.
So instead of just the song, you will also get sleeve notes, interviews with the band, upcoming tour dates, photos from gigs, or even the artist’s updates on social networking pages.
The important bit is that all this information will be constantly updated to keep it current, the idea being that illegally downloaded files won’t receive the updates. That’s the anti-piracy facet of the MusicDNA file.
As it’s still essentially an MP3 file but with extras, the format will play on existing MP3 players.
The Chief Executive of the architect of the MusicDNA file, Bach Technology, said in an interview with Reuters: “What we are bringing back to the end user is the entire emotional experience of music. We think it got lost in the transition to the digital era.”
“We think a beautiful piece of audio has been reduced to a number code. We want to enrich it again.”
