Viasat Broadcasting, backed by Modern Times Group, is adding to its HDTV offering for its Baltic customers.

ViaSat broadcasts over the Nordic and Baltic region, and is launching MTVNHD on its pay-TV platform as of today, Feb 1. MTVNHD is the first international high definition service dedicated to music and kids. An agreement has been signed with MTV Networks International for inclusion to Viasat’s satellite TV subscribers in Estonia, Latvia and Lithuania.

Viasat Baltics launched its high definition television (HDTV) offering last summer with National Geographic Channel HD.

MTVNHD has been part of the HDTV offering for Sweden, Norway, Denmark and Finland since October 2008. On Feb 1 it also became available in the Baltic region for subscribers who have a HD ready digital set top box and the Gold or Silver package and a HD subscription.

MTVNHD provides viewers with a music and kids’ entertainment experience across MTV, VH1 and Nickelodeon among other MTV Networks brands. The channel will broadcast exclusive new productions, such as the Jukebox London Live concert series, Rock Am Ring: The Prodigy or MTV Unplugged Katy Perry, as well as other music programmes and great live events. During weekend mornings the channel will show a selection of Nickelodeon programmes such as SpongeBob SquarePants and Tak and the Power of Juju.

“We feel that MTVNHD is an excellent addition to our HDTV offering. This strong channel brings the best in music and children’s programmes – complementing our present offering”, said Ulrik Bengtsson, CEO Pay-TV Emerging Markets within MTG.
