Slight dip in digital radio listeners

Darren Allan

RAJAR (Radio Joint Audience Research) has published its latest round of radio related statistics.

And as far as digital radio is concerned, although listening figures are up year-on-year, that’s not the case in comparison to the previous quarter.

Year-on-year, the amount of digital radio listeners increased by 14%, to a total share of 20.9% of all radio listeners.

However, in the previous quarter that figure had been 21.1%, so has slipped down very slightly.

Listening to the radio via a mobile phone has also increased year-on-year, and is up 7.1%

Why does everything have to be digital. It isn’t the best way to do everything. I listen to Radio 4 FM most days. To change to a DAB radio would add a lot of advertising music stations I would never listen to, and massively increase power consumption. A set of batteries in an FM radio last for months. On a DAB set I would be lucky if they lasted one month.

So if they do succeed in getting the majority to switch to DAB, and close the FM transmissions I will just stop listening to radio 4 or get the computer to stream the odd programme.
