Pricey Nexus One now available for pre-order at Play.com

Google’s big move into the smartphone market, the Nexus One, is now up for pre-order on the Play.com website.

It’s marked with a 16th February release date, just a week tomorrow, but before you get too excited there’s the small matter of the price.

And Play says it’s £600 to you, guv’nor, because they like the look of your face (or not).

It’s sim-free and unlocked, but to say £600 is a bit rich is like saying, well, that Bill Gates is a bit rich.

It sells at the equivalent of around £350 direct from Google in the US, and you can get one shipped over here for about £450.

So how Play.com has come up with that price is anyone’s guess. But Bill Gates himself is probably the only person who’ll be able to afford one from them at that mark up.

As a person who has purchased to N1′s in the U.K. I can confirm that this is a total rip off!! and to provide a small correction, it will not cost more than £400.00 to get it on your doorstep within a maximum of about 4 days!

  2. So is there a particular reason that Play have upped even the import price by around £170? So much for slaying the iPhone, at that price they’ll be lucky to shift a thousand units in the UK. I hope a network grabs hold of it, but wasn’t it kind of the point that it was network free in the first place?
