The former boss of ITN, Mark Wood, has been made the chairman of a consortium that hopes to win the government’s bidding process to find a provider for local news coverage in Scotland.
The consortium will be known simply as the Scottish News Consortium.
It includes the newspaper publishers DC Thomson, Herald & Times Group and Johnston Press, as well as the production firm Tinopolis.
The group that wins the bid will receive a windfall of £7 million from the TV Licence fee pot, which has been put together to provide regional news programmes that compete directly with the output provided by the BBC.
All bidders are to be assessed by an independent panel and the winners of the three pilot schemes will be announced on the 25th March by the Culture Secretary Ben Bradshaw.
