Global smartphone sales up, mobiles down slightly

Figures from IT research specialists Gartner have painted a picture of the state of the phone market at the close of 2009.

The data shows that total sales of mobile phones are down a touch. 1.211 billion phones were shifted in 2009, which is down 0.9% on the previous year.

Although the fourth quarter results were actually up, with 340 million units, an 8% increase from the last quarter of 2008.

The top selling mobile manufacturer was Nokia, with a 36.4% market share, followed by Samsung on 19.5%, and LG on 10%.

Both Motorola and Sony Ericsson dropped heavily, with the former down from 8.7% in 2008, to 4.8% in 2009, and the latter reduced to 4.5% from 7.6%.

Smartphone sales are buoyant, with 2009 seeing 172.4 million sold, up almost a quarter on 2008.

Apple increased its smartphone operating system market share, with the iPhone OS being boosted from 8.2% in 2008, to 14.4% in 2009. That puts the company in third place behind Symbian (47%) and RIM (20%). Windows Mobile dropped down 3% to 8.7%, back in fourth place.

Microsoft will certainly be hoping that Windows Phone 7 will help revive its fortunes.
