Google tests TV search

Could the search experts at Google be planning an assault on the digital TV market now?

Well Google has been testing a new search algorithm especially designed for television channels since last year.

The testing has been limited to people inside Google, but the basics are that they have a Google based search system designed specifically for TV programming, running inside a set top box.

This equipment can be used to find content on the internet, meaning that no matter where the show is being broadcast, the Google search system will find it and allow the user to watch the show online.

Compare this style of search to the electronic programme guides (EPG) that are offered in the UK and it becomes clear that a service such as this could be very useful, especially when tied up with the Google owned YouTube too.
