Half of UK could watch World Cup in HD

As the DTG Summit continues, claims and counter claims from the major players continue to take place.

One of the best comes from the MD of Freeview, Ilse Howling.

In a speech she predicted that half of the UK will be able to watch the World Cup in South Africa in HD.

This would imply that Freeview is expecting a mass of consumers buying up Freeview HD set top boxes.

A little bit later in the same speech, it was announced that ninety per cent of UK consumers would be able to watch the London Olympics in 2012 in HD.

Of course, Ilse Howling is discussing Freeview coverage rather than the actual take up of the newly launched Freeview HD service.

Freeview currently has around ten million users, twenty five per cent of which have expressed the wish to upgrade to HD.
