Sky TV New Zealand has switched off its analogue UHF pay-TV network today, March 10.

The company said the move would make it “New Zealand’s first ‘all digital’ TV broadcaster.”

Around 25,000 remaining analogue subscribers have been persuaded over the last six months to move to the digital-satellite platform.

Martin Wrigley, Sky Director of Operations, said: “Sky’s analogue UHF service has been in operation since Sky launched in 1990 – a number of the UHF transmitters are almost 20 years of age and nearing the end of their life expectancy.”

Sky’s digital-satellite platform launched in December 1998.

The platform is now in 47% of New Zealand homes.
