The dotcom (or .com to give the domain its technically correct name) is twenty-five years young today.
The first dotcom address, symbolics.com, was registered on March 15th 1985. Back in those days, no one had a clue what a .com was, or how wildly popular it would become.
Of course, the dotcom has a dark side to its past as well, which no one is ever likely to forget, either.
That mind numbing slash-dot-dash-dot-com song by Fatboy Slim was truly horrendous. Also, the bursting of the dotcom bubble was quite painful, too.
Symbolics was a computer company, although the very first domain was eventually bought up by another firm, and is now a business investment blog.
Other companies you may be more familiar with, which were also quick off the mark, albeit slightly later in 1986, included xerox.com, hp.com, ibm.com and intel.com.
These days, over 20,000 dotcoms are registered every single day, according to a BBC report. The dotcom remains the most popular top level domain.
