Island Freeview delayed

March 24, 2010

The BBC Trust was due to make an important decision on the future of the Gaelic language channel BBC Alba.

However the Trust has decided to delay making this decision until after the future plans for the BBC have been published.

Currently BBC Alba is only available to viewers that have a satellite TV system and, in order to offer the BBC Alba service to a wider audience, the plan was to add the channel to the free-to-view digital TV service Freeview.

But adding BBC Alba to the Freeview service is not as easy as if may first seem, as it would require the removal of around thirteen radio stations from the service during the peak times of between 5pm and 11pm every evening.
