Despite the continuing pace gathered by Solid State Drives, Western Digital is still happy to produce its turbo-charged VelociRaptor brand standard hard drives.

The latest models to launch, the WD4500HLHX and WD6000HLHX, are 450GB and 600GB respectively, and they’re both as nippy as a small razor-toothed dinosaur.

Running at 10,000 RPM, the VelociRaptor is billed as the “fastest SATA drive on the planet”, and the new versions have a 32MB cache and a 6GB/s SATA interface.

Read seek time is 3.6ms, and write seek is 4.2ms, with data transfer rates running at 145MB/s.

The VelociRaptors are 2.5 inch drives, but mounted in a 3.5 inch frame, with a built-in heat sink to keep them cool.

Western Digital also stresses the drive’s reliability, and the company puts its money where its mouth is, offering an impressive five year warranty.

Western Digital commented: “The new WD VelociRaptor hard drive is designed for blade servers, high-performance PCs, Mac computers, professional workstations, as well as 1U and 2U rack servers that require a balance of high performance and capacity.”

“As the only 10,000 RPM SATA hard drive on the market today, and a favourite amongst enthusiast and enterprise groups, the WD VelociRaptor hard drive now comes packed with twice the capacity and up to 15% performance increase over the previous generation.”

And the price? The smaller 450GB drive is $299, and the larger 600GB is $329.
