PSN downtime sparks 3D update speculation

Sony has announced that the PlayStation Network will be taken down from 4pm today, our time, right through until 4.30am tomorrow morning.

During that time, Sony says, you might not be able to access the PlayStation Store, sign in to PSN, or indeed play online games.

Basically, if you want to be guaranteed to be able to play online tonight on your PS3, then you better ensure you log on before 4pm.

The official reason given for the downtime is simply that it’s maintenance, but of course, given the length of the maintenance period, the Internet rumour mill has gone into overdrive.

Mainly with the idea that this will be the launch of the update which brings 3D to the PS3. Making it the PS3D, possibly.

We’ll know for sure what Sony has been up to behind the scenes come tomorrow morning.
