HTC Hero users in the UK can look forward to an update for their phones to Android 2.1.

The over-the-air update is set to be available imminently. Your handset will notify you of when it’s ready to download.

You can update via wi-fi or 3G, but HTC recommends an unlimited data plan if you choose to upgrade via the latter method.

HTC also notes: “Please back up your data first, and you have to upgrade your phone with the first FOTA [Firmware Over The Air] package to be able to get the Android 2.1 FOTA upgrade.”

To ensure you’re running Android 2.1 post-patch, you can check the firmware version via the home screen menu, in Settings-About Phone-Firmware Version. It should be 2.1 (obviously).

Meanwhile, the next incarnation of Android, version 2.2, has just been made available on Google’s own handset, the Nexus One. It’ll probably be some time before the Hero sees that arrive.
