Amazon is certainly getting behind its Kindle e-reading hardware and giving it a big push in the wake of the iPad’s launch.
Not only has the company revamped the Kindle device with a sleeker design and better contrast display, but it has slashed the price (the wi-fi version can be had for just £109), and made it directly available on the Amazon UK site (shipping at the end of the month).
And on Thursday, the UK Kindle Store opened up, with a library of over 400,000 books to tempt prospective purchasers.
Now it seems that the first games have come to land on the Kindle, as well, although there are just the two of them, and obviously they’re a far cry from the likes of, erm, Far Cry.
Naturally they’re word games, called Every Word and Shuffled Row, PC World reports.
Every Word presents the intrepid player with a small collection of letters, and using those consonants and vowels they must make as many words as possible. The longer the word, the better the score, and of course it’s all against the clock for added pressure.
Think of it as a sort of rolling Countdown with multiple words, except without anyone in a tight dress pulling out the letters, or a droning voice from Dictionary Corner trying to put you to sleep with an “amusing” anecdote.
Shuffled Row is a bit like a version of solitaire Scrabble, apparently. Perhaps the best bit about these efforts, however, is that they’re completely free to download onto your device.
More games are expected, although they will likely be simple word and maths affairs along these lines. Due to the Kindle’s hardware limitations along with its grayscale e-ink screen, it’s unlikely the device will ever be used to play StarCraft II competitively.
