Microsoft dates IE9 beta: September 15th

Darren Allan

Microsoft has announced the launch date for the beta version of its next Internet Explorer web browser.

The Internet Explorer 9 beta will be unleashed onto the public in just a month’s time on September 15th.

That coincides with an event Microsoft is holding over in San Francisco entitled “The Beauty of the Web”. Note that Windows XP won’t run the browser (perhaps making the operating system a “beast” compared to IE9′s “beauty”).

Internet Explorer remains the dominant force in web browsing, but its market share has been consistently eroded of late, particularly with the rise of Google Chrome, and of course competition from Firefox.

As we reported in June, IE holds a 60% share of the browser market, with established rival Firefox on 24%, and new-ish kid on the block Chrome on 7% and rising. Microsoft will be hoping IE9 can put the hammer down on its rivals’ advances.
