The launch of Google’s Gmail call feature has proved a huge success with over 1,000,000 calls made in the first 24 hours.
The new web tool, which allows voice calls to be made from a computer, effectively puts Gmail in competition with Skype.
The service was initially launched in the US, allowing free calls to be made nationally, as well as cheap international calls.
It can also integrate with Google Voice to receive calls.
Gmail calling is the latest of Google’s efforts to offer more services directly through the web browser.
The search giant already offers social network Buzz, instant messaging, email and massively successful video site YouTube and of course the more people stay connected, the better it is for Google.
