Android 2.1 coming to Dell Streak on O2

Darren Allan

Like Sony Ericsson Xperia X10 owners, those with a Dell Streak will doubtless be glad to hear there’s an upgrade on the way which will take them off the aged Android 1.6 operating system.

Streak owners with O2 should receive the Android 2.1 update today, so rumour has it, Electricpig.co.uk reports. The site talked to a Dell spokesperson, who wouldn’t confirm it would be today, but did say it would be very soon.

Android 2.1 on the device will mean that it has pinch-to-zoom added, as well as 720p HD recording on the 5 megapixel camera, and other bits and pieces such as support for live wallpapers.

However, Android 2.2 is currently being rolled out on other devices such as the HTC Desire, and there’s no news on when the truly up-to-date version of Google’s OS will be streaking onto Dell’s smartphone mini-tablet hybrid.

Android 2.1? Nexus users will be getting Android 3 in about a month! Why are all these top end suppliers so far behind?

  4. anthony says:

Beats me why they’re so far behind….why did dell not just start with Android 2.1 or 2.2 in the first place?……still no update but I have asked o2 to unlock my phone from their network and they said OK , will be done in 7 days

  9. anthony says:

Has worked for me but now pc suite will not sync….

Same as Sasan for me. Update bricked my streak, no factory reset. Back to Dell for “up to 10 days”. Useless.

  11. Sasan says:

I solved it … first of all you have to download Andriod 1.6 (rename it to update.apk) and copy to root of sd card … restart your phone and push down both up&down volume key .
show u a menu and select update from sd card
after update it … your phone is works fine and after that you can update Andriod 2.1.

I did it and my phone works fine .

    Good Luck

Thanks for posting that Sasan – I hope it will prove useful to someone. Sadly, my Streak is no longer recognized over USB and when removed the miniSD card is throwing I/O errors and refuses to be reformatted.

Dell collected my phone six days ago. I’m not sure how their “up to 10 days” is going to work out because this is day 6 and my device is still in transit TO the repair centre. F****** shambles all around really.
