Fibrecity brings 100Mbps broadband to Dundee

Dundee is the latest UK city to benefit from Fibrecity rolling out its next-gen broadband network.

The super-fast connections will offer fibre-to-the-home, with speeds of between 25Mbps to 100Mbps.

The i3 Group owned Fibrecity plans to run cables down Scottish Water’s sewage infrastructure, and to use micro-trenching (digging up the pavement) to reach areas where the water pipes aren’t viable.

If you’re a Dundee resident, you can apply to be hooked up to the fibre network for free by visiting www.getreadydundee.com. Fibrecity says it will be connecting around 4,000 people in the city every month, who will have the option of two ISPs available, Velocity1 and Fibreband.

Will Dawson, Convener of Dundee City Council’s City Development Committee, commented: “This brings Dundee a step closer to becoming the first city in Scotland to have every one of its homes and business premises able to access next generation broadband.”

“Dundee City Council has been working with the i3 Group to plan this roll out and every council tenant will receive a letter from Fibrecity Holdings when their home is about to be connected.”

Fibrecity was recently involved in controversy in Bournemouth, where its plan to use the sewers for cable runs was scuppered by Wessex Water over “contractual issues” and worries about potential blockages.

The company has thus been forced to start digging up the pavements all over, instead of using the water system.
