Craigslist censored over adult services

Craigslist has censored its adult services section without announcement, after a long running battle by US lawmakers to have it removed.

Since Craigslist created an adult section, it has been dogged by controversy – in 2008 attorneys pressured Craigslist to screen adverts posts there, and ensure proper contact details were provided.

However, last month, attorneys from 17 US states wrote a letter demanding that Craigslist remove its adult services section over concerns that it was promoting illegal sexual activities.

The company remains embattled, not least because of its popularity, plus the fact that the United States of America has powerful Christian values groups keen to tackle public decency issues.

While some have complained that Craigslist is receiving a disproportionate degree of attention over the issue, the message remains clear – if you are aimed at all age groups, eventually you have to decide between promoting family friendly services only, or adult.

So far, Craigslist has attempted to be full inclusive of all asked for services, but it appears the company is now looking to consider the matter again.

While the “adult services” section of Craigslist is currently covered by a black and white “Censored” sign, it allows Craigslist time to consider whether the revenue gains are worth the barrage of criticism and potential brand damage.
