BT launches wi-fi hotspot smartphone app

BT has released a new app for the iPhone and Android handsets which allows BT Total Broadband customers to easily connect to its 1.6 million wi-fi hotspots (of the BT OpenZone and BT Fon variety).

The app, which is a free download from iTunes or the Android Market, gives the user unlimited wi-fi access and includes a regularly updated mapping service so they can locate their nearest hotspot.

The BT Fon application will also be doing its bit for charity, with BT pledging a donation of 50p per app downloaded for Children in Need (up to a target of £10,000).

John Petter, Managing Director for BT Retail Consumer, said: “Millions of BT Total Broadband customers already get free access to the UK’s biggest wi-fi network. This free app makes accessing wi-fi so simple you don’t even have to think about it.”

“This represents real value to our customers at a time when more and more people are using their mobile phone to access the internet. By downloading it now customers can also help BBC Children in Need.”
