Samsung Galaxy Tab price is £600+

Darren Allan

Online retailers have emerged with pricing details for the Samsung Galaxy Tab, and it’s not good news.

Clove has the tablet listed at £617 for the 16GB version (as spotted by Geeky Gadgets) and eXpansys has it down at an even more eye-watering £680 (as pointed out by The Register’s Hardware department).

Indeed, the German Amazon site has also got it priced up at 800 Euros, so it would seem that the six-hundred-and-something-pound figure would appear to be correct.

Okay, so the Galaxy Tab is a well specified piece of equipment, with twin cameras, wi-fi and 3G, plus a 1GHz processor, and the ability to use it as a phone. But even so, this price looks a bit steep when compared to the iPad. And remember, this is a 7 inch tablet, a more compact model than Apple’s tablet.

It’s not like the iPad is particularly budget friendly itself. We’re not convinced that Samsung’s slate will be carving out too much market share with an asking price like this, even with its dangling carrots such as full Flash web browsing and hybrid phone capabilities.

Wow, that’s way too high. One thing I’ve always hated about Apple is their blatant overpricing, and it seems like Samsung have done the exact same thing with this.

    Bad move.

“Indeed, the German Amazon site has also got it priced up at 800 Euros” …it’s also worth bearing in mind that O2 in Germany have confirmed they will be offering the Galaxy tab on a 24-month contract with a 99 Euro deposit, with a monthly tariff of (if I remember rightly) 27 Euros. Given that none of the UK networks have confirmed any pricing for the Galaxy tab, I don’t think we need to panic just yet :-)

What a shame. I would have snapped this up at the £400 mark… But won’t bother now. The drop in screen size should immediately reflect a drop in price. The flash thing is only software related so shouldn’t command such a premium. It’s not like flash is new, so research into supporting flash is greatly reduced… Samsung, if you want to compete with iPad then drop your prices! I am not a fan of Apple’s “disguised” technology and will never buy an Apple product until it really is something new, but I am not overpaying for something that should be less expensive.

Looks like the Archos 70 will be a better deal at under £300.

  5. Boyers says:

Bloody daft price! Samsung need to do some serious re-thinking, or as they as daft as Apple?

  6. ericww says:

It’s not the best price for sure but it’s not that bad. I bought an iPad and it’s OK. Flash and phone functionality on the Samsung is attractive. And let’s not forget that the Samsung will be subsidised by the mobile network operators, so you can buy this on a contract just like every way over-priced Nokia mobile handset. Let’s get some perspective people!

  7. Boyers says:

Sorry ericww – £600 is just inane for a 7″ tablet! You can be a very decent netbook with tons more functionality (a bigger screen, larger hard drive, much better multitasking, more USB ports, better battery life, Flash etc. I’m not in the least bit interested in phone fuctionality – I already have one!
Better wait to see what Archos bring out – but if Silly Samsung insist on £600 they will strangle the baby at birth!

That’s just retarded. As far as I’m concerned, these tablets should be priced similar to netbooks, around and under the £300 mark. They’re a tertiary device, (after your smartphone and laptop/pc/mac) and should be priced like one.

I can’t see them selling any at this price unless they start doing 2 for the price of 1!
