The rivalry between this pair of iOS games is a big one, given that Cut the Rope is published by Chillingo, recently bought up by EA.
And Chillingo previously published Angry Birds, although after the company’s move to EA, developer Rovio has self-published the latest Angry Birds title, a special Halloween edition.
While Cut the Rope set a new app store record, according to Chillingo, shifting a million downloads in just ten days, it appears that the spooky new version of Angry Birds, complete with pumpkins and suchlike, has outdone its previous publisher.
According to an article in CVG, Rovio’s Halloween version of Angry Birds managed to hit the million mark inside a week, six days in fact, to set another new app store record.
Despite announcing its two million sales milestone yesterday, meaning that the game’s keeping up the pace of its initial sell through, Cut the Rope has actually been pushed down to third position in the app store. The original Angry Birds game has muscled its way into second place, behind the new special edition.
So while the furious birds are clearly making a nest for themselves at the top currently, it probably won’t be long before Chillingo starts to benefit from the marketing power of EA.
