You might recall, if you were an Amazon rental DVD subscriber a couple of years back, that Lovefilm originally took over the online shopping giant’s DVD service.
And now Amazon is buying it back, as it were – well, the company is actually buying the rest of Lovefilm, as it already owns a 42% stake. According to Sky News, the deal valued Lovefilm at around £200 million.
What does this mean for Lovefilm customers? Well, nothing immediately. The DVD and games rental service will remain separate to Amazon, and nothing will change in terms of prices, billing dates and so forth.
As for the future? Lovefilm wrote in a statement on its website: “Your existing Lovefilm team will stay in place and together with the guys at Amazon, we are planning some exciting new developments for the future of Lovefilm. We’ll keep you updated.”
Lovefilm also makes reference to the obvious tie-ups which will be possible, regarding the Lovefilm shop, and having buy buttons link to Amazon. The company doesn’t mention any specifics, just that there are “a number of exciting opportunities for the future.”
