A new VoIP telephony service for iPad users has been launched by Coms that enables the iPad to be used as a phone.

The service can be run through a softphone app which can be downloaded from the App Store. Coms recommends Bria app from Counterpath Inc as it already has the service embedded, making it easy to start calling away.

Coms is giving new customers a free UK telephone number of their choice and an initial £5 calling credit, with subscription packages starting from £5 per month.

Customers can choose their telephone number from 250 UK area codes including popular suffixes such as London and Birmingham.

Coms say that the service includes: “Free advanced telephone features such as voicemail, call forwarding, voice to email and calling line identifier display, as well as low cost call plans to all international locations.”

The service can be used on the go via any Wi-Fi connection, making it especially useful to travellers as they will be able to make and receive calls without incurring expensive roaming charges.

“Users of this new service can save up to 90% against BT on international calls and up to 77% on UK calls. In addition they get a new landline for free which travels with them, saving £296 against BT,” said Richard Bennett, CEO of Coms.

The company says it’s also working on new features which include the migration of existing landline telephone numbers, and future compatibility with all major operating systems including Android and Symbian.

Bennett added: “This new service builds upon the iPhone applications that we launched earlier in the year facilitating the development of the cloud telephony market. It is my belief that fixed line telephony will steadily migrate to cloud based telephony services which offer individuals and businesses increased features and lower call costs.”
