Sony Ericsson in 3D phone rumour

Two possible 3D phones on the way, one with a 4.7 inch display

Currently, if you want a 3D smartphone, there are two options, although it’s a case of either/or depending on which side of the Atlantic you call home.

We have the LG Optimus 3D, and the Americans the HTC Evo 3D, but the latter is expected to emerge within the next month or two over here.

However, your 3D handset options are set to get broader than that, because not only is there a likely 3D version of the Galaxy S II coming from Samsung, but it seems Sony Ericsson might have three dimensional plans, too.

There are several rumours floating around about this, and Sony may even be looking into two models, one with a normal sized screen, and one with a larger 3D display.

The latter will purportedly be a Dell Streak sized mini-tablet affair, with a screen real estate of some 4.7 inches, and a resolution of 1280 x 720, which should make glasses-free 3D games look more impressive.

The other will obviously be the smaller affair at around the 3.5 inch mark. There are no details regarding other tech specs yet, although these will be Android phones, no surprise there.

Of course, 3D is very much the fad at the moment, but the existing 3D phones haven’t exactly set a scorching pace sales-wise. Even when it comes to dedicated gaming devices, the 3DS hasn’t sold well, either (hence the incoming price cut next week).

Of course, this could all be a matter of the software – it certainly seems like the relatively weak launch line-up is what put folks off the 3DS. Perhaps that and the knowledge that the price would inevitably decrease.

If Sony concentrates on making a good range of 3D games available for its device at launch, then maybe it could see more success. That didn’t happen with the Xperia Play, mind you, which had a lukewarm launch similar to the 3DS (actually more so, if anything).
