Firefox for Android tablets on the way

Pitched somewhere between the mobile browser and full-fat desktop

The Mozilla mobile team have announced details of the new project they’re currently working on, Firefox optimised for Android tablets.

The browser for Android tablet devices has essentially evolved from the mobile browser, but has added enhancements which allow the UI to take advantage of larger screen sizes.

The new design, which is for Android 3.0, retains many of the hallmarks of Honeycomb, such as visual elements like a large back button and the shape of the tabs.

The tabbed menu remains the same, although the tabs are now on the left which is intended to make them easier to reach as well as having the ability to show more search results.

Mozilla has taken advantage of the larger screen that tablets have to offer by reintroducing some of the elements left out of the mobile version. In landscape mode, there is a left bar which allows users to take advantage of faster browsing, whilst in portrait this is turned into a drop down menu from the top.

In landscape, Mozilla decided that most users will employ their left thumb to switch between documents whilst using their other hand to swipe the screen. This makes tabs easy to reach and ensures there is still plenty of space above the soft keyboard to display search results.

The idea is that users will still have plenty of space for browsing, whilst retaining the ability to keep multiple websites open at the same time.

Different security levels for websites are now colour-coded so it’s easy for users to see when they are shopping via a secure site, or if login details are secure.
