Apple now sues Samsung in the UK

More legal volleys are fired over smartphone and tablet disputes

Forget dedication, perspiration or any of the other usual attributes associated with success, what you really need these days is litigation. At least in the technology world.

A ding-dong legal battle is currently being waged between Apple and Samsung over their smartphones and tablets, both accusing each other of copying concepts and infringing patents.

Apple has had some success in its patent infringement suits against Samsung in Europe, achieving a ban on the Galaxy smartphone range in the Netherlands last month, and getting the Galaxy Tab 10.1 blocked in Germany.

The new 7.7 inch version of the Tab also had to be pulled off the Samsung stand in the middle of the recent IFA show in Berlin.

Samsung, of course, hasn’t taken this sitting down. It is now appealing against the German Tab 10.1 ban, and has opened a new legal front against Apple in France, with a suit based on three patent infringements.

And now Apple has fired back, again, this time on UK soil. Actually this latest action is a counter-suit against a patent infringement accusation filed by Samsung in the UK back in June.

Although exactly what patents and issues either company is basing its case on in this country isn’t yet clear.

One thing is clear, though; we can expect a further flurry of these cases popping up throughout Europe in the remainder of the year.

Apple is waging a campaign against Android, with not just Samsung in its sights. Another big Android handset supporter, HTC, is also in the legal firing line, with some sixteen patent suits on the go.

Although HTC has recently hit back with suits of its own, having been sold patents by Google as fresh ammunition.

That move shows Google is willing to defend its Android manufacturers, although what help the search giant will provide Samsung with, if any, is yet to be seen.
