The OnLive cloud gaming platform has officially gone live in the UK as of this morning.

The service, which was launched in the US last year, provides the user with access to cloud gaming on the PC or Mac via a client application, or on their HDTV via a micro-console device which plugs into an HDMI port.

No games have to be downloaded or installed, whatever you want to play is streamed off the OnLive servers. OnLive also allows for spectators and chat between them, as well as the uploading of video clips directly to Facebook to show off your gaming skills.

You can sign up for a free account here to try out the service and demos of games for nothing, plus some of OnLive’s social features are available to non-paying users as well.

Then you can purchase full access to individual games should you wish, or rent them for a three or five day period if you’re still not sure you want to commit to buying from the demo.

Another option is to subscribe to the PlayPack bundle for £6.99 per month, which grants access to over a hundred titles, including the likes of F.E.A.R. 3, Homefront, Borderlands, Batman: Arkham Asylum, Saints Row 2, Deus Ex: Game of the Year Edition and World of Goo.

PlayPack subscribing members also get discounts on new full price games which are released through the service at the same time they hit the streets on the major consoles and/or PC.

Speaking of discounts, there are a number of initial offers which OnLive has cooked up to entice people to try it out.

The primary one being that users can purchase their first game from the OnLive library for £1, an offer which ends on October 9th.

Another offer comes from BT, which is giving its broadband customers three months of free access to the PlayPack (hundred plus games) bundle, with BT having obtained the exclusive rights to bundle OnLive with its broadband packages. BT customers can also avail themselves of the first game for £1 offer.

Finally, if you’re going to the Eurogamer Expo, then it’s well worth checking out the OnLive stand as they’ll be giving away the HDTV micro-consoles which normally retail at £69.99. However, that’s while stocks last, so you best get down there early to stand a chance.

John Spinale, OnLive VP of Games and Media, commented: “We’re excited to bring an incredible range of social features to the UK that are unique to the OnLive world.”

“OnLive UK gamers will immediately find themselves immersed in OnLive’s international massive spectating and voice chat community, which adds an unprecedented dimension to the gaming experience.”

OnLive requires a 3Mbps or better broadband connection, and is looking to expand its platform coverage soon, with apps promised for Android and iPad tablets.
