Amazon are set to begin shipping their Kindle Fire tablet next week across the water and have revealed that the device will offer users thousands of popular apps through the Android App Store.
Users will have instant access to apps and games including Netflix, Twitter, Rhapsody, Facebook and comics by comiXology.
Games from popular vendors such as EA, Zynga, PopCap and Gameloft will also be available using Amazon’s 1-Click payment technology.
Apps will be available on all of a user’s Android devices once they have been downloaded and paid for and customers will also receive a free “paid” app daily.
“We started talking to app developers everywhere the day we introduced Kindle Fire, and the response has been overwhelming,” said Dave Limp, Vice President, Amazon Kindle.
“In addition to over 18 million movies, TV shows, songs, books, and magazines from Amazon, we are excited to offer customers thousands of apps and games to choose from on Kindle Fire.”
“We’re adding more apps and games every day across all categories.”
Netflix members will be able to watch unlimited movies and TV shows, and will be able to access content at the point they finished viewing on other devices such as a TV or PC.
“We’re excited to team up with Amazon to give what we think will be a huge community of Kindle Fire owners the opportunity experience all that Netflix has to offer,” said Bill Holmes, Vice President of Business Development at Netflix.
“We’re certain that our members will have a great viewing experience on Kindle Fire.”
The arrival of Amazon’s answer to a tablet device has been causing a buzz for months as industry experts ponder whether it will constitute the first real competition to the iPad, which has dominated the market since its release.
The tablet is a snip at just $199 and features a dual-core processor, colour touchscreen and a cloud-based operating system.
Users will have access to over 18 million films, TV shows, songs, books, magazines, apps and games.
A free one month trial of Amazon Prime is also included which gives Fire owners unlimited streaming for movies, and access to the new Kindle Owners’ Lending Library.
