A platform for war veterans has been created by ex-military members and their families who work at Google to provide a number of useful tools tailored to suit their needs.
It is hoped that Google for Veterans and Families will be useful for those still in service as well as those who have served, and offers transitional tools to enable ex-servicemen and women to find their next path in life.
The “VetConnect” tool enables members to find others they have served with to share their experiences, and a dedicated YouTube channel has been created to enable discussion for veterans, families and the public.
There is also a facility for vets to build a resume using Google Docs for those who are seeking employment following leaving the services.
Vets can also store documents online relating to their military career, make free calls to friends still in service who are posted overseas and make maps based on where they have served.
Also in the pipeline is “Tour Builder”, which will be powered by Google Earth. This can be used to create 3D maps of service histories and users can add pictures and videos about their own military story. Currently users can view sample tours and it is expected that more details will be announced soon.
Currently Tour Builder has sample tours from veterans who served in Vietnam and those who were in Japan at the end of WWII.
Google had a proactive month in October. Not only did 100 ex-servicemen visit the Soldier and Family Assistance Center to attend resume workshops, Google visited the Walter Reed National Military Medical Center in the US to teach wounded service members how to use their tools to stay in touch during recovery.
The search giants also introduced the Veterans Job Bank, a customised job search engine designed to “identify veteran-committed job openings”.
“Even playing a small part to serve those who have served has been an honor,” Google said on their blog page.
