Yesterday saw the launch of the Lumia 800, Nokia’s first foray into Windows Phone 7 territory, the platform it has staked its smartphone future on. Not that the Finnish firm had much choice…
And earlier this month, when discussing the company’s overall strategy moving forward, CEO Stephen Elop also hinted that Nokia might be considering the development of a tablet, given the new “opportunity” on the horizon. Namely Windows 8.
Although these were just vague hints, it seems that Nokia is indeed preparing to launch such a slate next year, at least according to reports which cite the head of the French division of Nokia, Paul Amsellem.
Amsellem was talking to a French newspaper, Les Echos, when he mentioned that the Windows 8 tablet is indeed coming, and it should be here in the summer. In fact possibly as soon as June 2012.
That would certainly shake up the tablet world a bit. Of course, its success would depend on exactly how well Microsoft can talk up Windows 8 powered slates as iPad rivals.
The Nokia slate could even potentially be going head to head against the iPad 3, which may be out by next summer, or at least waiting in the wings.
Interesting times indeed, with Nokia firmly throwing its lot in with Microsoft, it would seem. You’d almost think Stephen Elop used to work for Microsoft. Wait a minute…
