Vodafone has launched a new app which aims to provide free protection and safety measures for children who have mobile phones, along with a partner app full of advice.
The Guardian app for Android phones enables parents to select from a wide range of control options on a handset.
Parents can block access to the mobile internet, or only enable it at certain times. The app can also deactivate the smartphone’s camera, and specify time periods when calls are allowed to be made. App usage can also be blocked.
Specific mobile numbers can be blocked as well, to prevent cyber-bullying texts or calls getting through. Plus any cyber-bully text messages will be stored in a secure folder as evidence, if needed.
Outgoing calls can also be restricted to certain contacts, for example, just the parents. The Guardian app also automatically alerts parents on their mobile if the child calls the emergency services.
The companion Digital Parenting app is a library of advice for parents on the pitfalls and benefits of smartphones in the hands of children. Again, this is a free Android app, and both apps run on Android 1.6 or better and are available now.
Vodafone has also announced that it will be a founding member of the CEO Coalition, a European organisation dedicated to ensuring child safety online.
Vodafone Group CEO, Vittorio Colao, commented: “The smartphone revolution is enormously positive for society, transforming the way millions of people communicate, share and learn. Children and young people have an intuitive understanding of the new world of smartphone communications and the mobile internet.”
“However, parents who are concerned about the potential risks from cyber-bullying and unsuitable content often lack the tools, support and skills to protect and support their children. The Vodafone Guardian and Digital Parenting apps will empower parents and enhance their ability to share in their children’s digital journey to adulthood.”
