Samsung backtracks on ICS for Galaxy S?

At first the upgrade wasn't going to be available, now it might be, albeit a cut down version

Samsung has done an about face, so speculation has it, following something of an outcry after the company announced that it wouldn’t be making Ice Cream Sandwich available for its older Galaxy S phone.

Just before last weekend, C-Net highlighted the fact that Samsung revealed via a blog post that the Galaxy S and indeed the Galaxy Tab would not receive an upgrade to Android 4.0.

The firm cited the limited resources available to the Galaxy S, given the space Samsung’s TouchWiz UI takes up – along with other bits and pieces added by networks – as the reason for why Ice Cream Sandwich wouldn’t be feasible on the device.

Needless to say, there were some less than happy Galaxy S owners who quickly went online and vented. Apparently that reaction has caused Samsung to rethink the situation.

Now C-Net reports that while Samsung isn’t going to push out ICS for the Galaxy S and Tab, it’s looking into the possibility of producing a “value pack” of ICS.

Basically that’s a cut down version of Android 4.0, with the major features (hopefully) brought on board such as slicker web surfing and multi-tasking. At least that would be something for Galaxy S owners…

However, Samsung hasn’t officially spoken out on the matter, and this is still a rumour.

It may be untrue, or indeed that Samsung examines the possibility of such a value pack and decides it isn’t actually feasible in the end. Don’t get your hopes up too much at this stage.

In other Ice Cream Sandwich update news, there’s been more disappointment for LG owners who have been told they won’t get ICS rolled out to their devices until the second or third quarter of next year. That’s April at the earliest, and possibly September for some folks.

LG posted the upgrade schedule on its Facebook page, with the Optimus 2X and Prada phone due to get their update in Q2 of 2012, and the Optimus 3D and Optimus Black to follow in the third quarter.

By which time Jelly Bean, or whatever the next incarnation of Android ends up being called, will be on the horizon.
