Rumours have been flying about concerning the Galaxy S III’s launch date for quite some time now.
Some previous rumours have pushed the release back to the summer, but the latest whispers have indicated that the launch could be fairly soon – and that would seem to be backed up by this latest piece of gossip.
An invitation to a Samsung press event has been leaked by a Dutch site, Tweakers.net (via Engadget). The event is due to take place on May 3rd, and the invite simply says: “Come and meet the next Galaxy”.
Surely that has to refer to the Galaxy S III, unless there’s another Galaxy tablet or something in the wings, but we doubt it.
So, in theory we have just over two weeks to wait before we finally find out the specification of what will doubtless be the top Android handset of 2012 to rival the iPhone. Certainly if previous form has been anything to go by, with the S II selling an absolute storm.
We’d expect some firm technical specs to leak out soon if the announcement is coming at the start of next month.
There have been plenty of rumours regarding the hardware already, of course. Speculation indicates that the S III will carry a 4.65 inch Super-AMOLED Plus display with a 1280×720 resolution. That’s nearly equivalent to the iPhone’s retina level, but will look more impressive on the S III’s larger display.
A monster 1.5GHz quad-core processor is also expected – let’s hope the battery can cope with that – and previous rumours have pointed to a 12 megapixel camera, although we’re not so sure about that one now.
