The Mobile Choice 2012 award winners have just been announced, and Samsung’s Galaxy S III has scooped the Phone of the Year accolade.
Do note, though, that the poll – in which some 26,500 readers placed their votes – was compiled pre-iPhone 5, so the battle for the S III was against the iPhone 4S.
44 per cent of voters declared the S III the best handset of 2012, with the iPhone 4S, HTC One X, Sony Xperia S and Nokia Lumia 800 the runner-ups.
Apple’s iPad, however, did secure the Tablet of the Year award, with its new retina display helping to ensure it stayed ahead of the Android competition. The Nexus 7 was runner-up.
Interesting, three-quarters of those polled either already had a tablet, or planned to get one in the near future, showing just how much the slate market has now taken off.
As for the Manufacturer of the Year – that accolade went to the maker of the top phone, Samsung. The S III obviously helped there, as did the Galaxy Note which has been a very popular handset.
Sony was the runner-up manufacturer, in a slightly surprising development, muscling out the likes of HTC and Nokia who were also shortlisted.

Looks good to me, I need a new phone. My £50 Nokia slidescreen phone broke after 5 months. The £2.50 Motorola phone I bought in 2010, intially as a backup, has become my full time phone as it works perfectly! However, this Samsung looks really great. I think I’ll be buying one.
